July 5, 1954 Brief History : A Legendary Performer Volume 2 is a compilation album featuring recordings by Elvis Presley. As with the first volume of the series, issued in 1974, the collection was a mixture of previously released and never-before-released recordings. In this volume, RCA Records released for the first time "Harbor Lights", a ballad Presley recorded during his first session for Sun Records in July 1954. This marked the first time since the 1965 album Elvis for Everyone, in which the Sun recording "Tomorrow Night" was included, that RCA had released any "new" songs from the Sun Records archives. Other previously unreleased material included an alternate take of his 1956 hit "I Want You, I Need You, I Love You", several performances from the 1968 NBC TV special that had not been previously issued, the song "A Cane and a High Starched Collar" from the soundtrack of the 1960 film Flaming Star, and an alternate take of his 1960 recording "Such a Night". Also included were a pair of previously unreleased interview recordings. It was certified gold on October 25, 1977 and platinum and 2× platinum on July 15, 1999 by the RIAA. Details : 1976 Release. First cover with pale blue tint. *NOTE* Vinyl labels have pale gold & silver text. Made in U.S.A. at bottom in white. SUN
SESSIONS (LP) Brief History : The Sun Sessions is a compilation of Elvis Presley recordings at Sun Studios in 1954 and 1955. It was issued by RCA Records in 1976, and had been issued and charted as The Sun Collection in the UK the previous year. It features liner notes by Roy Carr of the New Musical. The album features most of the tracks recorded at Sun studio by Sam Phillips, the head of Sun Studios. It includes "That's All Right (Mama)" one of the few recordings regarded as "the first rock and roll record." Phillips said that Presley was rehearsing with his band, Scotty Moore and Bill Black, when Presley started singing the song, a blues song written by Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup. Phillips said that the version of the song was what he was looking for when he signed Presley, and turned the tape recorder on. Elvis recorded more than 20 songs at the Sun studio, including some private recordings. Of these, 15 appear on this album. Missing songs: The Sun Sessions was released in March 1976 and reached #76 on the pop and #2 on the country charts. The single "Baby, Let's Play House" combined with "I'm Left, You're Right, She's Gone" reached #5 on the country charts in 1955. Also, RCA Victor saw that Elvis was rapidly building a reputation for his live performances. They offered Sun Records $35,000 to buy out Presley's contract, and the rest is history. The single "That's All Right" did not chart in the US when released in 1954, and it was never issued as a single in Great Britain during Presley's lifetime. In 2004, the song became the focus of attention when it was the subject of a great deal of publicity because of the 50-year anniversary. There was a special ceremony on July 6, 2004 featuring Isaac Hayes, Justin Timberlake, Moore which was beamed live to 1200 radio stations. The song went top five in the UK and Canada and also charted in Australia. The Sun Sessions was also re-released in 2004 (in Japan only) to celebrate the anniversary. In 2003, the album was ranked #11 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In 2001, the TV channel VH1 named it the 21st greatest album of all time. Allmusic rates it as five stars, saying "it collects his first, and arguably most important, recordings into one convenient package. Who doesn't need this in their record collection?" The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll included two tracks from the album: "Mystery Train" and "That's All Right." In 2002 The Sun Sessions were chosen by the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress to be included in its archives given their importance to the development of American popular music. Details : First release *NOTE* This album is the very first Elvis album to feature "I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine", which was only previously issued as a single. After more than 20 years, "The Sun Sessions" marked the song's official debut on LP. |

ELVIS PRESLEY BOULEVARD, MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE (LP) (US) RCA APL1 1506 Released: May 1976 Side 1 Hurt Never Again ***** Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain ****** Danny Boy **** Last Farewell * Side 2 For The Heart Bitter They Are, Harder They Fall * Solitaire ** Love Coming Down ***** I'll Never Fall In Love Again *** *
Recorded: Graceland, Memphis, February 2, 1976 Brief History : From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee is an album by Elvis Presley, released in 1976 on RCA Records. It is often mistaken that this is a concert recording as the album states the songs were "recorded live". While this is true, the songs were recorded live in the recording studio at a studio set up in Presley's mansion, Graceland, not in front of an audience. Two songs recorded during the session would be released the following year on his final album, Moody Blue, Moody Blue and She Thinks I Still Care. From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee was the King's fourth album to reach #1 on the Billboard country music album sales chart. "Hurt" was a top 10 hit on both the country and adult contemporary charts, while "For the Heart" stalled at #45 on the country charts. The latter did make the pop top 30. (Both songs would again find success on the country charts in the '80s--"For the Heart" became the first single for the Judds in 1983, while Juice Newton took her version of "Hurt" to #1 in 1986.) In the CD format, the tracks of From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee were added to Moody Blue in 2000 to create an expanded 19-track CD of the latter title. It was certified Gold on 10/7/1977 by the RIAA. Front Cover : Photo of Elvis. Title top left. Catalogue number
