How Great Thou Art is the 28th album by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Victor Records in mono and stereo in February 1967. Recording sessions took place at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 25, 26, 27, and 28, 1966. It peaked at No. 18 on the Top Pop Albums chart. It was certified Gold on 2/16/1968, Platinum and 2x Platinum on 3/27/1992 and 3x Platinum on 10/13/2010 by the RIAA. It won a Grammy Award for 1967 in the Best Sacred Performance category.

His previous gospel album His Hand in Mine had been a solid catalog seller for RCA. While Presley faced difficulty getting radio airplay in the mid-1960s, during that decade radio stations played Christmas music at Christmas-time and religious music at Easter, and the Colonel was convinced Presley could break through in these niche markets. So, recording sessions were arranged with the purpose of producing a Christmas single and a follow-up LP to His Hand in Mine.

How Great Thou Art would in fact be Presley's first non-soundtrack album recording of new material since Pot Luck with Elvis in 1962, and his first album release not to include any soundtrack recordings since the previous gospel album in 1960. It also introduced producer Felton Jarvis to Presley on the singer's second non-soundtrack sessions since May 1963. Jarvis would continue to work with Presley for the remainder of his career.

As the sessions progressed, Elvis rejected many of the planned songs for which Freddy Bienstock had obtained publishing deals, and began picking favorites of his own and those of the musicians. The five songs in the public domain were credited as "arranged by Elvis Presley" and published by Elvis Presley Music allowing Bienstock to secure the royalties for those selections. In fact, it is likely that an engaged and enthusiastic Presley indeed did the arrangements, as he certainly did with the title song, his months of practice at home on his beloved gospel songs paying off.

Twelve tracks were completed for the album, including the standards "In the Garden" from 1912 popularized by Billy Sunday and "Run On" from the jubilee tradition. The 13th track, "Crying in the Chapel," had been recorded during the sessions for His Hand in Mine and released as a single in 1965. The sessions also produced the single "Love Letters," two b-sides, and two additional songs that would be added to the Spinout album. The Christmas single would be completed, a composition by Memphis Mafia mainstay Red West "If Every Day Was Like Christmas," at the next session on June 10.

The church and its steeple featured on the cover is that of the First Church of Christ, located in Sandwich, Massachusetts.

Brief History : Double Trouble is the twenty-ninth album by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Victor Records in mono and stereo, LPM/LSP 3787, in June 1967. Recording sessions took place at Radio Recorders and at MGM Studios in Hollywood, California, on June 28, 29, and 30, 1966. It peaked at #47 on the Billboard 200.

Presley had usually insisted on working in the comfortable environment of a regular recording studio, and had avoided the large movie studio soundstages, but MGM executives with an eye on budgets insisted on moving the soundtrack recordings after the first night to just such a soundstage. A frustrated Elvis dutifully went along, but the final straw was having to sing "Old MacDonald," Presley storming out of the session in a huff after finishing a very short master of "Long Legged Girl (with the Short Dress On)."That song would be issued as a single in late April, prior to the film premiere, and would peak at an anemic #63 on the Billboard Hot 100.

After his enthusiasm for the well-crafted, modern-sounding gospel recordings made just the previous month in Nashville, the rushed and pedestrian soundtrack returned Presley to the depressing grind of churning out forgettable records for forgettable movies. Even the chosen release date for Double Trouble would prove unfortunate — the same day as The Beatles' era-encapsulating landmark album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Nine songs were recorded for the film, coming in at a brief 17:11 and far too short for a normal LP. To bring up the running time, three tracks recorded at the "lost album" sessions of May, 1963, were added to push the album over the twenty-minute mark. Two had already been issued as b-sides to singles, "Never Ending" the flipside to a four year-old album track "Such A Night," and "Blue River" on the back of an eight year-old vault track, "Tell Me Why.".

Pretty much identical to the '77 reissue but there's an RCA Pure Gold sticker in the top right hand corner of the sleeve.

RCA Records launched its "Pure Gold" album series in the United States in 1975 under the supervision of longtime RCA producer Ethel Gabriel. This highly successful series consisted of mid-priced reissues of some classic and best-selling RCA Victor albums as well as new "Pure Gold" compilations by many popular RCA Victor artists.

LPs issued in the U.S. in this series carried an ANL1 prefix; beginning around 1981, many "Pure Gold" series albums were reissued in the RCA "Best Buy" series; these reissues carried an AYL1 prefix and some (not all) had a "Best Buy" logo printed on the album covers.

A typical "Pure Gold" series label was of the same style as regular RCA Victor labels issued between 1968-76, but was bright yellow (rather than orange-yellow or tan) and without "Victor" to the right of the spindle hole. This label was not redesigned when the standard RCA Victor label reverted to the long traditional black color and restoration of the "His Master's Voice" trademark in mid 1976.

Beginning about 1981 when the "Pure Gold" series became part of the RCA "Best Buy" series, the label was changed slightly, with the catalog , matrix numbers and Side A and B information moved from the top of the label to the right of the spindle hole.

NOTE: Not all reissues carried these label changes; Some reissues did feature "Victor" to the right of the spindle hole. Some reissues late in the LP era had the large vertical "RCA" logo moved from the left side of the label to a horizontal position across the top of the label. Reissues new to the "Best Buy" series around 1981 carried the black RCA Victor label with the "His Master's Voice" trademark.

A few older "Pure Gold" series albums with the typical yellow RCA labels were reissued in the "Best Buy" series with black RCA Victor/"His Master's Voice" labels.

Brief History : Clambake is the thirtieth album by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Victor Records in mono and stereo, LPM/LSP 3893, in October 1967. As Presley began the last decade of his life, he entered RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee on February 21, 1967 for Recording sessions for his twenty fifth film. Supplemental material sessions took place on September 10 and 11, 1967. It peaked at #40 on the Billboard 200.

By the end of 1966, Presley no longer commanded the same level of sales or artistic respect as he had during the first ten years of his career. But Elvis had little enthusiasm at this juncture for more soundtrack sessions, the project already in jeopardy before it started. The sessions turned out a fiasco; of the eight songs recorded, two had been edited out of the film, and even with "How Can You Lose What You Never Had" restored to the soundtrack, that left an album of merely seven songs.

The album would prove to be a turning point in Presley's career. After many years of churning out forgettable songs for forgettable films, he was clearly past his prime. All realms of popular music had totally bypassed him during the 1960s while he had been 'lost in Hollywood'. So Presley decided to begin recording music written by accomplished songwriters. A session to record additional material in Hollywood was cancelled in August, rescheduled at RCA Studio B in September. Disregarding publishing control, Presley picked songs that appealed to him personally, including Eddy Arnold's country and western hit of 1956 "You Don't Know Me" and Jimmy Reed's 1960 rhythm and blues hit, "Big Boss Man." Both selections were issued as a single at the end of September before being added to the album, the A-side just barely making the Top 40. Presley also requested a song he had heard on the radio in Los Angeles by Jerry Reed, inviting Reed himself to duplicate the distinctive acoustic guitar part. They rousted Reed from a fishing-trip, who arrived to play on Presley's version of his own composition, "Guitar Man." After it was recorded, Reed refused to turn over the usual publishing percentages to Freddy Bienstock, another assault on the soundtrack formula that had been in place throughout the decade. Five songs were selected from this session to bring the album up to a total of twelve tracks.

Including this LP, of his fifteen albums since Pot Luck with Elvis in 1962, only three had not been film soundtracks: one was a compilation of hit singles, one a compilation of leftovers from a ten-year span of recording sessions, and only one a bona fide studio album, the gospel How Great Thou Art. Even with the five recent non-movie songs, including a hit single, Clambake sold less than 200,000 copies, faring worse than its predecessor Double Trouble which had been his lowest-charting album so far.
