1973 Brief History : The album was constructed by the first pick of a session held at Stax Studios in Memphis in December 1973 and two songs, "I've Got a Thing About You Baby" and "Take Good Care of Her", which were left over from the session at Stax in July 1973. The album includes a collection of songs that vary in style and genre. Released the same day as the recording of Elvis: As Recorded Live On Stage In Memphis was being made, the title was taken from the song "Talk About the Good Times". Many of the songs are covers of hits at the time, like "Spanish Eyes" and "She Wears My Ring". Charting low at the time of its release, it was considered typical 1970s Elvis material and was his first album to hit the "cut-out bins". Today it is more highly regarded among Elvis fans. The album did have some success though upon its original release, becoming a Cashbox #1 hit and charting in the Top 50 in the UK. The album released two singles, both hits: "I've Got a Thing About You Baby" rose to #4 on the Country charts, #39 pop; "My Boy" hit #1 on the Adult Contemporary charts, as well as #14 Country and #20 Pop. Coliseum, Memphis, March 20, 1974 Brief History : Recorded Live on Stage in Memphis is an album of recordings by Elvis Presley released by RCA Records in July 1974 and recorded on March 20 of the same year, in front of a live audience at the Midsouth Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee, Presley's hometown. His home, Graceland, is pictured on the cover. The album was recorded the same day the King's Good Times album was released. This was Presley's fifth live album in less than five years (and the last to be released in his lifetime). He earned his third Grammy Award for the performance of "How Great Thou Art" included on this album. The album peaked on the chart in August 1974. It was certified gold on July 15, 1999 by the RIAA. Although the album was not a major success, it did produce Presley's third and final Grammy award winner, "How Great Thou Art", which won for best inspirational performance (www.grammy.org). Two other gospel songs, "Why Me Lord" and "Help Me" (which was released as a single from the Promised Land album), are given an inspired performance. Another highlight is a strong version of the Sun years classic Eagles cover "Trying to Get to You", a favorite live choice for him, which shows that he still had the power to belt it out when he wanted to. The live recording of "Let Me Be There" on this album was later used as filler on Presley's final studio album, Moody Blue. It was also issued as a promotional-only 45 RPM disc in 1974, with the same song on both sides (mono and stereo). It is one of few Presley albums released during his lifetime where his face is not pictured on the cover. The album also managed to reach #1 on the Country charts and the top 40 of the Hot 100, and was his last to reach the top 40 until Moody Blue in 1977. In 2004, FTD Records re-released this album containing the entire concert. Front Cover : Photo of Graceland. Title top centre. Catalogue number

- How Great Thou Art Brief History : CD-4 (Compatible Discrete 4) / Quadradisc Compatible Discrete 4 (CD-4) or Quadradisc (not to be confused with compact disc) was introduced in May 1972 as a discrete quadraphonic system created by JVC and RCA. Record companies who adopted this format include Arista, Atlantic, Capricorn, Elektra, Fantasy, JVC, Nonesuch, A & M, Reprise and Warner. This was the only fully discrete quadraphonic phonograph record system to gain major industry acceptance. In the CD-4 system, the quadraphonic audio was divided into left and right channels, which were recorded orthogonally in the vertical plane of the disc groove, which is the case with normal stereo. The audio frequencies (20 Hz to 15 kHz), often referred to as the sum channel, would contain the sum of the left front plus left back signals in the left channel and the sum of the right front plus the right back signals in the right channel. In other words, when observing the audio frequencies only, the record appeared to have an ordinary stereo recording. Along with this audio, a separate 30 kHz carrier was recorded on each groove wall. The carrier on each side carried the difference signal for that side. This was the information that enabled a combined signal to be resolved into two separate signals. For the left carrier it would be left front minus left back, and for the right carrier it would be the right front minus the right back. These audio signals were modulated onto the carriers using a special FM-PM-SSBFM (frequency modulation-phase modulation-single sideband frequency modulation) technique. This created an extended carrier frequency range from 18 kHz to 45 kHz for the left and right channels. The algebraic addition and subtraction of the sum and difference signals would then yield compatible and discrete quadraphonic playback. CD-4 was responsible for major improvements in phonograph technology including better compliance, lower distortion levels, pick-up cartridges with a significantly higher frequency range, and new record compounds such as Q-540, which were highly anti-static. A typical CD-4 system would have a turntable with a CD-4 cartridge, a CD-4 demodulator, a discrete four-channel amplifier, and (ideally) four full-range loudspeakers. Some manufactures built the CD-4 demodulator into complete four-channel receivers. Simply put, CD-4 consists of four recorded signals (LF, LB, RB, RF) and the following coding matrix, similar to FM broadcast stereo multiplexing. The CD-4 encoding/decoding matrix: The CD-4 record track is broader than a conventional stereo track, so maximum the playing time is lower than a conventional stereo record. Quadradiscs/CD-4 records were seldom called quadraphonic. When a record was called quadraphonic it was almost always an SQ-encoded or an other matrixed record. But when a record was called quadradisc it was always a CD-4 record. Front Cover : Photo of Graceland. Title top centre. Catalogue number

FUN WITH ELVIS ON STAGE (LP) (US) RCA CPM1 0818 Released: October 1974 A TALKING ONLY ALBUM Brief History : Having Fun with Elvis on Stage is a 1974 live album by Elvis Presley. The album is unique among Elvis' recordings as it does not contain any actual songs: it consists entirely of byplay recorded between numbers, although Elvis is frequently heard humming or singing "Well...", which during the actual performances led into songs that have been edited out of this recording. Much of the album consists of Elvis making jokes, with the material spliced in a manner that has been described as lacking continuity and nearly devoid of comprehensibility, let alone humor. Ostensibly, the album came to be as a ploy by Colonel Tom Parker, Presley's manager, to release an album that RCA Records would own no rights on. Parker initially released the album on his own label, Box Car Records, and it was initially sold only at Presley's concerts. The album was later packaged and marketed by RCA as a legitimate concert album, with the only warning for the buyer being the subtitle "A Talking Album Only" on the cover. Presley is credited on the back sleeve as the album's executive producer. Having Fun with Elvis on Stage has been described as the worst album of Elvis's career. A review by Allmusic likened it to "an auto wreck that somehow plowed into a carnival freak show." Rock critics Jimmy Guterman and Owen O'Donnell, writing in their 1991 book The Worst Rock and Roll Records of All Time, named it the worst rock album ever, although one could easily note the lack of "rock and roll" in the record. Although Presley spends most of the album exchanging jokes with audience members and his band, near the end of side one he is captured speaking autobiographically about his early life and his career aspirations before becoming a singer. The album managed to make it up to #130 on the Billboard album charts, and even as high as #9 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. This was not the first release by RCA of spoken word material by Elvis. In March 1959, the label released Elvis Sails (EPA 4325), a three-track EP consisting of interview recordings made before his departure for Germany with the US Army. By all accounts, Presley was infuriated when RCA put this album into the general marketplace, considering it a tremendous embarrassment. As a result, the album was quietly deleted sometime in 1975 but reissued for a few years following his death. Since the late 1990s, fans have put together several pirate "sequel" discs. The original album remains unavailable on CD, but has been reissued as a series of three 10" records. Front Cover : 6 Photos of Elvis. Title at top. Catalogue number top
