August 30, 1962 Brief History : It Happened at the World's Fair is the seventeenth album by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Victor Records in mono and stereo, LPM/LSP 2697, in April 1963. Recording sessions took place at Radio Recorders in Hollywood on August 30 and September 22, 1962. It peaked at #4 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart. Initially booked for August 28 and 29, sessions were delayed as Presley had taken ill, and only two numbers were completed satisfactorily on the first night of August 30. Ten songs were tackled for the soundtrack, the standouts being two written by one of Presley's favorite songwriters, Don Robertson taking an active part in the sessions by playing keyboards, and one by the team that had written the #2 hit single "Return to Sender" of the previous year, Otis Blackwell and Winfield Scott. All three songs, "I'm Falling In Love Tonight," "They Remind Me Too Much of You," and "One Broken Heart for Sale," would be included on the 1995 compilation of soundtrack highlights. "One Broken Heart for Sale" and "They Remind Me Too Much of You" would be released ahead of time on January 29 as a single to promote both the album and the film. "Broken Heart" just missed the top ten, peaking at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, with the b-side charting independently at #53. Truncated with a verse excised to a very short length of 1:35, "Broken Heart" was the first RCA single of Presley's career that did not make the top five, excluding the bizarre case of "Shake Rattle and Roll" which did not chart at all after being released on August 31, 1956, simultaneously with the Presley debut album divided up into six singles. ELVIS
GOLDEN RECORDS VOLUME 3 (LP) Catalogue Number : LPM - 2765 Brief History : Elvis' Golden Records Volume 3 is a greatest hits album by American rock and roll icon Elvis Presley, released by RCA Victor, RCA Victor LPM-2765, on August 11, 1963. The record was the third volume of a five volume collection. It is a compilation of hit singles released in 1960, 1961, and 1962. The album was originally released as a mono and stereo LP record and was reissued several times. It was certified Gold on 11/1/1966 and Platinum on 3/27/1992 by the R.I.A.A. Colonel Parker envisioned a marketing strategy of alternating soundtrack albums with independent studio recordings, accompanied by singles. By mid-1963, Presley's studio albums had struggled while the soundtrack albums had all done brisk business. Sessions in late May had failed to produce material cohesive enough for a regular album, those tracks surfacing on singles and pell-mell on soundtracks and the Elvis for Everyone compilation. The immediate solution was another compilation of hit singles, the sales numbers proving the success of this interim strategy. Golden Records Volume 3 comprises eight Top Five A-sides along with four b-sides which also made the Top 40, "Fame and Fortune," "I Gotta Know" "Little Sister," and "Anything That's Part of You." Five A-Sides, "Stuck on You," "It's Now or Never," Are You Lonesome Tonight?," "Surrender," and "Good Luck Charm" went to #1. "It's Now or Never" had been adapted from the 1898 Neapolitan song "O Sole Mio," and "Are You Lonesome Tonight," a ballad from 1926, had been a rare request to Elvis from the Colonel for his wife. As with the other titles in the series, all singles in this compilation are certified by the RIAA as attaining gold status with sales of at least 500,000 copies. Original recordings produced by Steve Sholes, Joseph Lilley, Chet Atkins, Urban Thielmann, Jeff Alexander, and Hans Salter. Details : *NOTE* The below 16 page full colour folio with a giant size pin up inside was given away at record stores with this release. On a further note in photo 6 (page 5 - last photo listed here) of the folio they listed Elvis' Golden Records Volume 3 as LPM / LSP 7117 which is incorrect. In photo 16 (page 15) they have listed it incorrectly also. The folio was released with 2 corrections after this. This folio also came with a giant size poster stapled inside. |

Hollywood, January 22, 1963 Brief History : Fun in Acapulco is the nineteenth album by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Victor Records in mono and stereo, LPM/LSP 2756, in November 1963 - the November 1 date is disputed. Recording sessions took place at Radio Recorders in Hollywood on January 22 and 23, 1963, and at RCA Studio B in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 26 and 27, 1963. It peaked at #3 on the Top Pop Albums chart. The album, along with the accompanying film, would be Presley's last release before the arrival of Beatlemania. The third of his tropical travelogue films for Paramount Pictures after Blue Hawaii and Girls! Girls! Girls! finds Elvis frolicing south of the border. The standard stable of songwriters for Presley delivered songs to match, with titles like "Marguerita," "El Toro," "You Can't Say No In Acapulco," and "The Bullfighter Was A Lady." Included as well was the old standard "Guadalajara" by Pepe Guízar from the 1930s. With the change from the normal routine, and with the addition of trumpet players Rudolph Loera and Anthony Terran, Presley engaged the material with greater enthusiasm than on recent soundtrack outings. Four of these songs would be included on the 1995 compilation of soundtrack highlights: the title track, "Mexico," "Marguerita," and the song released as the lead single, "Bossa Nova Baby." "Bossa Nova Baby" arrived in stores one month prior to the soundtrack, coupled with the track "Witchcraft" by rhythm and blues songwriter and arranger Dave Bartholomew and a hit for The Spiders in 1956. The fact that the bossa nova craze of the 1960s was a Brazilian phenomenon rather than a Mexican one mattered little, as the single peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. Compensating for the skimpy ten-track It Happened at the World's Fair album, the Colonel insisted on making Fun in Acapulco a good value. Two additional tracks, "Love Me Tonight" and "Slowly But Surely" were pulled from the aborted album sessions of May, 1963, and added here to bring the running order up to thirteen tracks.
