ELVIS
GOLDEN RECORDS VOLUME 4 (LP) Brief History : Although he had remained a popular artist since the release of his previous Golden Records volume in 1963, placing eight albums in the Top Ten and 17 singles in the Top 40, Presley's sales had cooled off since his heyday. The compilation album Elvis for Everyone in 1965 was his first to sell under 300,000 copies, and his last five soundtrack albums had all done progressively worse in the marketplace, units shifted dropping to under 200,000. Singles were no longer reaching the Top 40 automatically, and while his recent 45 "Big Boss Man" sold 350,000, that fell short of the needed 500,000 to qualify for gold status in US singles sales. Usually a guaranteed seller, this volume sold only 400,000 copies; better than his recent soundtrack albums, but well off the mark set by its three predecessors. The future of Presley's career was certainly in question. Gold Records Vol. 4 comprises five Top 40 A-sides along with seven b-sides, five of which also made the Top 40. Three songs had not been written expressly for Presley: "Love Letters" came from the 1945 film of the same name; "Witchcraft" had been a 1956 hit record for The Spiders; and "What'd I Say" was the Ray Charles classic from 1959. Three b-sides, "Lonely Man," "A Mess of Blues," and "Just Tell Her Jim Said Hello" were old enough to have been included on Golden Records Volume 3, and another b-side, "Ain't That Loving You Baby," came from RCA's furlough session of June 10, 1958, set up to augment their stock of Presley product while their star was in the army. The first three Gold Records volumes covered two to three years of singles releases, but there was a five-year gap between this and the previous volume. This would be the last of the series issued during Presley's lifetime, the fifth and final volume released posthumously in 1984 surveying singles from 1969 to 1977. Volume 5 would fail to chart. The July 15, 1997 reissue added six tracks and altered the running order. "Rock-A-Hula Baby" dated from the 1961 soundtrack to Blue Hawaii, pulled off that album as the flip to accompany "Can't Help Falling In Love" as a single. Three tracks were the advance singles for their respective soundtracks: "Bossa Nova Baby" for Fun in Acapulco; "Kissin' Cousins" for its album; and the famous "Return to Sender," released a month before Girls! Girls! Girls!. The flipside to "What'd I Say," "Viva Las Vegas" by the team of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, would prove a more durable Elvis recording, receiving myriad cover versions including those by the Dead Kennedys, Bruce Springsteen, and Nine Inch Nails. The gospel song "Crying in the Chapel" had been recorded during the sessions for His Hand in Mine, this five year-old track going to #3 and selling a million copies as a single in 1965. By 1968, the practice of releasing LPs in mono was being discontinued. As a result, RCA issued very few mono copies of Gold Records Vol. 4, and mono pressings of this record are considered collector's items. Original recordings were produced by Steve Sholes, Joseph Lilley, Chet Atkins, Urban Thielmann, George Stoll, and Felton Jarvis. Details : |

Studio B, Nashville, May 27, 1963 Ultra-rare first and only mono release, Indianapolis pressing (-1S/-1S), White Top Monaural RCA Victor label. This was the last LP released in both mono and stereo. Elvis Presley monaural pressing of Speedway! Since the early 1960’s, RCA Victor Records had released the majority of their LP line in dual formats, monaural and stereo. The monaural releases are denoted with the prefix LPM, while the stereo is denoted by LSP. In 1968, the monaural format was phased out in favor of stereo. The later releases of 1968 were pressed in very limited quantities. Though it is not known the quantities, it is known that collectors will pay a premium for many of these releases. On such release is the last Elvis Presley album printed in dual formats, the rare monaural pressing of Speedway with catalog number LPM-3989. It is interesting to note that this release is not listed in the 1978 discography listing of The Boy Who Dared To Rock. This is either an oversight or was not known to exist at the time of the pressing. Mfg: RCA Victor Records This LP would be found on Billboard’s Hot LP chart for thirteen weeks after its entry on July 6, 1968, when it was number 82. COVER 1: Front: Nipper logo at top center, number at lower left. DISC 1: Black label, “Monaural” at bottom. INNER SLEEVE 1: 21-11201 40D (6/1968) INSERT 1: Color 8″ x 10″ Elvis (circa 1962) photo, signed “Sincerely, Elvis Presley.” Back lists other RCA Elvis records. Brief History : Speedway is the thirty-second album by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Victor Records in mono and stereo, LPM/LSP 3989, in June 1968 while some say May 1st is the date, but this is disputed. Recording sessions took place at MGM Studios in Hollywood, California, on June 20 and 21, 1967. It peaked at #82 on the Billboard 200. By June 1967, while Presley was toiling at the sessions for this soundtrack, the recent release of the magnum opus by The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, had the music industry in thrall. The Velvet Underground & Nico would build its influence through the decades, and Surrealistic Pillow by Jefferson Airplane, the debut by The Doors, and I Never Loved A Man the Way I Love You by Aretha Franklin were all top-selling albums. The Monterey Pop Festival had taken place just the past weekend some 300 miles up the California coast from where Presley was working. He was probably aware of some of the changes being wrought in popular music around him, but in his own increasingly isolated world he was most aware that there were more lousy soundtrack songs to record. Eight tracks were recorded at the sessions, with "Suppose," the only song that held interest for Elvis, dropped from the movie. Two tracks were pulled for a single, "Your Time Hasn't Come Yet Baby" with "Let Yourself Go" on its b-side, and both sides made the lower reaches of the Billboard Hot 100 but bombed sales-wise. "There Ain't Nothing Like A Song," rejected from the soundtrack for Spinout, was one of two songs that feature the lead vocals of Nancy Sinatra, here in duet with Presley. All her vocals, and her "Your Groovy Self," the only time a track without Elvis featured on any of his releases, were recorded at a separate session on June 26, produced by Lee Hazlewood. Three leftover tracks, including one from the May 1963 "lost album" sessions, were unearthed to round out the album. Speedway took over the new low for chart position and album sales by Presley, shifting units numbered in five figures, jeopardizing his recording career. Much to his relief, it killed the soundtrack formula, this being the final Presley dramatic feature film to have a full soundtrack album. His last five movies of the decade — Stay Away, Joe, Live A Little, Love A Little, Charro!, The Trouble with Girls, and Change of Habit — concentrated on Presley the actor, not Presley the singer, with minimal song requirements. It is also the last Presley album to be released in both stereo and mono editions as mono was being phased out by the industry, thus making the rare mono pressing of Speedway (LPM-3989) a sought-after item among collectors Three songs from this album appear on the 1995 survey of his 1960s soundtrack recordings: the two sides of the single, and the title track. |

PRESENTS ELVIS SINGING FLAMING STAR AND OTHERS (LP) (US) RCA PRS 279 Released: October 1968 Side 1 Flaming Star Wonderful World ******* Night Life * All I Needed Was The Rain ***** Too Much Monkey Business ****** Side 2 Yellow Rose Of Texas / Eyes Of Texas *** She's A Machine **** Do The Vega ** Tiger Man ******** *
Recorded: Radio Recorders, Hollywood, July 9, 1963 Brief History : Singer Presents Elvis Singing Flaming Star and Others is the thirty-third album by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Records in stereo, PRS 279, in October 1968. It spent five months available only at select retail stores featuring products by the Singer Sewing Machine Company as a promotional tie-in with Presley's upcoming Christmas television special on the NBC network, which Singer had sponsored. On a further note linked with this release, was a 8" x 10" photo distributed along with the LP. If you are one of the lucky ones to have this photo along with the LP it will add greatly to the value. All tracks were compiled from sessions for Presley film soundtracks, with the exception of "Tiger Man" from the Singer Christmas Special. The cover of Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business" was a warm-up at a session for film songs to Stay Away, Joe. Excepting "Flaming Star," the title song from Presley's 1960 movie of the same title which had been released on the Elvis by Request extended play single in February 1961, all tracks were previously unreleased. The "Texas" medley and "All I Needed Was the Rain" appeared in Viva Las Vegas (1964) and Stay Away, Joe (1967), respectively, while "Wonderful World" appeared over the opening credits to Live A Litte, Love A Little (1968). "Flaming Star" had been one of only two songs performed in that film. The live performance of "Tiger Man" was held off the initial broadcast of the NBC television special, but replaced the segment with "Blue Christmas" for the repeat broadcast of the special in the summer of 1969. This track has the distinction of being the first live recording by Elvis ever commercially released. The remaining songs were not actually used in their respective films. Brief History : This release on the Camden label of the "Singer" album came the following year. Due to the success of this album in making the charts upon reissue, RCA elected to continue with Presley product on the budget Camden label through 1972, LPs containing less than the standard running time, with unused soundtrack recordings and reshuffled previously released items. United Western Recorders, Burbank, June 20, 1968 Brief History : Elvis (NBC TV Special) is the thirty-fourth album by Elvis Presley, released on RCA Victor Records in mono, LPM 4088, in November 1968. Recording sessions took place in Burbank, California at Western Recorders on June 20, 21, 22 and 23, 1968, and at NBC Studios on June 27 and 29, 1968. It peaked at #8 on the Billboard 200. It was certified Gold on July 22, 1969 and Platinum on July 15, 1999 by the RIAA. Prior to the videotaping of the Singer Christmas Special, a soundtrack album to be released before the December 3 broadcast was recorded. Several initial contract stipulations were obviated by Presley and program producer Steve Binder, notably the one against having a live audience present, but album producer Bones Howe was unable to requisition proper recording equipment, getting the sound feed from the single-channel microphones on the video cameras. Hence, the album was released in mono only, at a time when the recording industry was switching over to stereophonic records exclusively for both albums and singles. It is hard to know if the "Mono" story is true however since every issue if this album clearly states on the labels and back cover, "recorded in stereo", and at the same time, in large letters the word "MONO" is listed on every issue of both sides of the record label. Unlike the drudgery of the feature film soundtrack recordings, Presley was genuinely excited by the project. For the album, the musical format presented Presley in three different settings: production numbers featuring medleys of his material; an informal small band featuring medleys in front of a live audience; and the two original numbers with Presley backed by an orchestra in front of a live audience. The two ballad tracks from this album were issued as singles. "If I Can Dream" being released earlier in the month, backed on the B-side with a song from his movie in theaters at the time, Live a Little, Love a Little, making it a double promotion on one record. It peaked at #12 on the Billboard Hot 100, his highest charting single since 1965. "Memories" was released over two months after the broadcast, backed with the title song to his next film, Charro!. By making it to the top ten on the album chart after his previous album had charted at a dismal #82, this LP resuscitated his recording career at a time when it seemed practically moribund. Several hours of additional music were recorded for the special, and this material has been reissued in many different formats over the years. Front Cover : Photo of Elvis.
