Not
to be confused with the US ABC
label. This one started about 1970 mainly recording Australian
classical music and Australian orchestras, but also recording
a more broader music content. The label was an arm of the
Australian Government’s Australian Broadcasting Corporation
and was set up in order to derive income from sales. A chain
of ABC shops were also set up as a retail outlet for the sale
of books, music, videos and now cds & dvds, in order to
lessen the bite on the taxpayers. ABC released a few 45’s
mainly from programs aimed at a younger audiences to capitalize
on the popularity of the music. The label still exists and
“Auntie” ABC is still pumping out CDs & DVDs. You could
almost parallel this label to the Russian “Melodiya” label.
