Virgin Records was started by Richard Branson in 1970, as a mail-order record business. It soon opened its first shop, in Oxford Street, London and in 1972 Virgin expanded to include a recording studio and a Roger-Dean-designed record label.
Virgin Records was sold to Thorn EMI in June 1992 for a reported US $1 billion (around £560 million), with a special non-competition clause that would prevent Branson from founding another recording company during the five years following the agreement.
