Stax Records was founded in 1957 as Satellite Records, renamed to Stax in 1961.
The label was a major factor in the creation of the Southern soul and Memphis soul music styles.
Stax Records went bankrupt in 1975.
By June 1977, all Stax assets, including all masters, completed and unfinished recordings, together with all the contracts, were purchased by a group which licensed Fantasy Records to handle all Stax products.
