The Soul label was started in March 1964, primarily as an R&B/Jazz outlet for the growing Motown empire. But this didn’t last long, given Motown’s hitmaking tendancies and an artist roster of Junior Walker and the All Stars, The Originals, Jimmy Ruffin (brother of The Temptations, David), Shorty Long, and Gladys Knight and The Pips - how could the chart-toppers not happen? They did and well into the early 70’s.
Soul continued along with Motown’s move to Los Angeles in 1973, but it’s staying power was now jeopardized with Gladys Knight moving to Buddah. Motown sadly closed down it’s fourth-largest subsidiary in April 1978.

A cleverly made pirate copy of the "store copy"
that never exsisted
The worlds most expensive record.
The Soul label is also home to the worlds most expensive record - Frank Wilson's "Do I Love You" (35019). The record was cancelled by Berry Gordy and he had ordered the pressing plant to destroy all copies. Currently, only two actual singles are known to exsist, both are DJ copies. One of the copies was apparently Motown's file copy, the other was the pressing plants file copy. One of these records surfaced in England in 1977, and quickly became a Northern-Soul club favorite, prompting UK's Tamla-Motown to officially release the record in 1979 (TMG 1170).
One of the copies sold for 37.000 U.S. dollars in 2009.
