Apple
Records was started in August 1968 by The Beatles and has always
been distributed by its parent company: Capitol
Records. For a relatively “small” label its release to chart
hit ratio is unusually high (87 releases to 63 chart hits,
only the Philles label is higher, 28 out of 36). The label folded
at the end of 1975.
In January 1976, all the Beatles 5000 and 2000 series releases,
and Paul McCartney/Wings 1800 series reissues were moved to
the Capitol label.
John, George and Ringo’s reissues went over to the Starline
label.
Until the CD reissues all the “non-Beatle” artists catalogues
remained in limbo for 11-12 years.
With the advent of the CD era the imprint was revived in 1987
and continues to this day. |
