US Tamla Records was started by Berry Gordy on January 12, 1959 with an $800 loan from his family.  In September 1959, Berry Gordy founded a second label, Motown Records.
In the UK, before Tamla/Mowtown got it's own label, the recordings appeared on London Records (1959-1961), Fontana Records (1961-1962), Oriole Records (1962-1963) and Stateside Records (1963-1965).
